Josie Mansfield

'Jubilee Jim' Fisk
'Jubilee Jim' Fisk was born in Pownal on April 1, 1835, and was fatally shot by Edward Stokes on January 7, 1872. The murder was over the affections of Josie Mansfield. Early in his career, Fisk worked with his father, who managed a hotel in Brattleboro. Later, still as a young man, he went to New York City and eventually joined Jay Gould and became director of the Erie Railroad. He also fancied himself a patron of the arts and wound up owning Pike's Opera House. His funeral was held at the Revere House, which was owned by his father and was located on the corner of Elliot and Main Streets. It was a major event in Brattleboro at the time.

The Fisk Monument
The Fisk Monument was erected on the grave site of James Fisk Jr. at the Prospect Hill Cemetery. Created by sculptor Larkin G. Mead, the Fisk monument has in a circle at its base four young women. Each of the women holds one of the following: a sack of coins, railway shares, steamship holdings, and an emblem of Fisk's patronage of the theater.
