The Brattleboro Historical Society
Making History

The Brattleboro Historical Society develops exhibits to inform the local community about its history. In recent years the Society has had exhibits in Brattleboro's store windows on baseball, railroads, Madame Sherri (a colorful personality), wedding gowns, honoring dad on Father's day, Brattleboro in the 60s and 70s, and Brattleboro's Wheel Club (a sporting club).

The Society maintains two exhibit cases in the Town of Brattleboro's Municipal Center at 230 Main Street. It also helped create an exhibit of some of the Sanborn maps of Brattleboro. The Sanborn map, originally used for fire insurance underwriting purposes, is considered the definitive record of historic building locations.

The Society participates in the annual Vermont History Expo sponsored by the Vermont Historical Society in Tunbridge, Vermont. There it has offered exhibits on the Estey Organ Company of Brattleboro, Fort Dummer, Austine School, and oral histories that were captured and published in book form.

The late Larry Cooke, a Brattleboro businessman, in 1999 gave the Brattleboro Historical Society an 1805, center hall, four chimney home on Western Avenue in West Brattleboro. One room is developed as a 1890 parlor would have looked and is open to visitors on summer weekends. In addition there are changing theme exhibits of Brattleboro artifacts in adjoining rooms and the attached barn.
